"They Will Be What They See"

I'm proud of the last two pieces I penned for the lastest issue of Black MBA magazine.  They aren't literary masterpieces, but can easily be put to good use. Hopefully others will learn as much from reading as I did writing them. One quote (of many) that stuck: "They are inundated with this spirit of people that believe in them. When they take that and internalize that, they start to believe in themselves, and then everything changes."
Dwayne Bourgeois, Trevor Jaha, Kamau Patau, and David Banks share what they've learned about improving male-to-male relationships for the greater good.  Staff, students, and volunteers at programs like Leaders of Tomorrow, Allan Houston Foundation, the NYC Academy of History and Citizenship for Young Men, and the Eagle Acadamy all say it starts close to home.

Where I've Been

Self-promotion aside, I've never quite got  the swing of social networks.  The only fruitful relationships that came from LinkedIn were with people I knew prior to "Send Invite."  I've since found a better use - meeting old friends in new places.  My first stop was Australia.  By the time I'm done I hope to hit Canada, Prague, Georgia, Florida, California, perhaps even Germany.  And I've found a much easier and entertaining way of keeping myself motivated on sharing my world adventures with my online pen-pals.  The Where I've Been app uses a digital map to visually track your journeys and share with your friends on Facebook, along with any assorted photos and commentary you may have.  In other words, proof you have a life.  Status updates be damned.

Men Of A Certain Age

It happens sometime between a man's late teens and mid-30s.  It's the recognition that you do have a responsibility.  That image matters, challenge is good, individuality isn't about some false sense of instant gratification, and pursuit of success means progressing agendas and being your brother's keeper. It's knowing you can have as much fun in full acknowledgment as you did in blissful ignorance.  Even more so.  Because growing up while staying young isn't some juxtapose or oxymoron.  It's a life lived to capacity.  Just ask Jay.
